(Part 2) Icherisheher: A Living Museum That Will Take You Some Steps Back in Time

In 2000, Icherisheher, along with the Palace of The Shirvanshahs and Maiden Tower  were inscribed on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Though three years later UNESCO placed Icherisheher on the list of the World Heritage in Danger due to an earthquake occurred on November 2000 as well as the lack of a plan of development and protection of Icherisheher, the works done for the restoration and conservation of the city were able to remove it from the endangered list in 2009. The year 2020 marks the 20th anniversary of the inclusion of Icherisheher in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
The inner part of Baku used to be the center of The Shirvanshah Dynasty back in the 12th century. A place that survived the modernization wave and centuries of destruction and resurrection has successfully preserved its own cultural treasures that we can still thankfully enjoy today. As if it were a living open-air museum where it plays an essential role in comprehending the sustainability of cultural heritage, preserving the heritage and presenting it to the next generations, it is able to picture the ancient Baku up until this day. It is the place that has made an effort to preserve its own history. A Traditional nuanced scenery can easily be found here at Icherisheher, the beautiful old city. It showcases a combination of Shirvani, Sasanian, Arabic, Zoroastrian, Persian, Russian, and Ottoman presence around the area, which was built on a land that has been inhabited since the Paleolithic Era. Blocks of walls and towers surrounding Icherisheher are used to protect the city as if it were Caspian Sea’s clam shell that is protecting its beautiful hidden pearl. Behind the city’s thick walls lies a group of beautiful pearls dated back to centuries ago: Maiden Tower, the Shirvanshahs Palace, mosques, local bathhouses (hammam), and caravanserais, a roadside shelter place. Those ancient buildings were built from limestones and share the same color, spoiling our eyes with harmonies.
With its labyrinth, narrow sandstone streets, local cafes and souvenir shops built in a unique architecture, strolling around the city in between the cobble-stoned walls will make you feel as if you are part of its old days. There’s no need for a time machine to take you on a remarkable journey through time. Every alley possesses its own mysterious charm that only makes us crave for more walks through the alleys. Some middle-aged men in traditional clothes sometimes pass by too. Its magical view is really amazing, evoking the feeling of being in the setting of a real-life history. The streets drive us past ancient stone walls as well as architecture and buildings. Breathtaking unpredictable views are sometimes found at every turn. The surreal feeling to the city’s beauty and glam accompanies every step down the maze.
The effortless beauty of Icherisheher is truly mesmerizing. Its cultural heritage, be it in the form of ideas, patterns of actions, or artifacts are all an inseparable element of the city. The scenery of the ancient buildings, the aura of the old days, the interactions between the local dwellers, the sun lights coming in through the atmospheric alleyways that is accompanying your evening stroll, and the feeling of being in a living open-air museum, nothing is going to be able to replace that. It is no wonder that the place got tons of beautiful nicknames. As a place that offers a wide range of cultural beauties, the hidden pearl of the Caspian Sea really deserves all the admiration.

Volunteering during The Pandemic

I was soo shocked i immediately turned on my laptop and wrote this blog. I just read a news saying that the number of positive cases of Covid-19 here in my country has reached up to 5000. This is c r a z y. The number escalated quickly from 4000 to 5000 in just 3 days. I don't know who to blame here as i don't have the capacity to talk about it but this increasing number of cases sure worries the hell out of me. Due to this issue, the head of my housing complex implemented a 'local lock down' as a way to help to stop the spreading of the virus. Under no circumstances are outsider allowed to enter my neighborhood, and vice versa. With this kind of situation, we often question ourselves: what can i do to help us against this virus? By simply staying at home, reducing the frequency of meeting people, washing our hand, we can contribute in fighting against the virus. But how can we help people in need -Those who suffer from the pandemic as they got an unpaid leave or b...

Icherisheher: A Living Museum That Will Take You Some Steps Back in Time

Talking about cultures, Baku is one example of how different influence could lead to a varied cultural heritage. It is Azerbaijan’s most eastern point and capital city that is situated on the western shore of the Caspian Sea. As one of the cities that lies on the Great Silk Road, Baku was one busy area for it became the hub between the western and the eastern world. The fact that Baku is located 28 meters below sea level makes it the lowest lying capital city in the world. Situated at the Crossroad of Europe and Asia, throughout its development, Baku gained a lot of influences from both Europe and Asia. No wonder that it possesses a wide range of variety of cultures. Baku, The City of Winds, is one of the centers of Azerbaijan’s culture. As if it were a sea clam, Baku stores its precious hidden pearls: myriads of hidden cultures. One thing that is very interesting from Baku is how two places that seem to come from two different centuries coexisted, in one city. It feels like we are ...

The Present

Hello,  I hope this letter finds you well.   It's 7.30 in the morning, I have my coffee with me right now, a kind of coffee you would never have imagined. I’m planning to stay in my house all day as there is going to be a big rain today. The weather forecast has improved a lot in ten years, by the way. That’s why I kind of feel like writing a letter to you. I'm sipping my coffee, preparing for my breakfast, watching the news, and shopping for groceries while writing this letter. Don't ask me how I do that. You will find it out yourself. You know what? I've rarely heard anything about corruption on the news lately, but racism is still an issue even up to this day. *sigh*   Sitting on my bed looking outside my automated window, I realize that we are seeing a different world at the moment. The wooden window that you're opening right now is not here anymore, mate. No, I’m not seeing the green sawah (rice fields in Indonesia) you're seeing from your bedroo...
